Applied Decision Making

The backcountry ski course your friends hope you take.

Applied Decision Making is a series of three-day skills-focused touring days for backcountry skiers who want to feel more confident in real terrain.

Join for just one module — or both. December tends to focus on early-season systems and travel; February often leans into bigger terrain and more complex decision-making. Each block stands on its own.

It’s part guided trip, part skills-focused course, and all about helping you become a more confident and capable partner in your touring group.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Full touring days, hands-on coaching, clear debriefs — all in the kind of terrain you actually want to ski. This is field-based learning, not a classroom.

WHO IT’S FOR

You’ve done your avalanche courses and you’ve spent time touring with your friends. Now you want to make stronger calls in the field — with terrain, weather, and your group. You’re not aiming to guide, but you want to be the person others can trust.

This course is designed for strong intermediate to advanced skiers who want to:

  • Build confidence in personal and group decision-making
  • Understand terrain, snowpack, and risk at a deeper level

The Touring Days
This isn’t a boot camp. We’ll keep a steady pace with time to pause, regroup, and dive into decision-making. But you should feel good about spending a solid day in the mountains.

In December, we’ll typically be out for 4–6 hours, covering around 800–1000 m of elevation gain. In February, days might stretch to 5–8 hours with 1000–1500 m of climbing, depending on conditions and objectives. Not every day will max that out — but being reasonably fit and comfortable moving through the terrain will help you get the most out of it.

COURSE FORMAT

December: Early Season Foundations
Focus on movement skills, rescue refreshers, terrain management, and building smart systems early in the season.

February: Mid-Winter Progression
Step into more complex terrain, refine your decision-making, and take on more group leadership with support and feedback.

You can take either module on its own or combine both for a broader seasonal progression.
